Azerbaijan says its forces had shot down an Armenian drone near the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, a claim that de facto officials in the separatist region rejected.

Nagorno-Karabakh military officials told RFE/RL on January 29 that the statement by the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry regarding the shooting down of a drone was "false."

The alleged incident comes as Azerbaijan and Armenia accuse each other of multiple cease-fire violations. Several soldiers on each side of the conflict have been killed in recent weeks.

Baku and Yerevan have been locked in a conflict over Azerbaijan's breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh for nearly 25 years.

Armenian-backed separatists seized the mainly ethnic Armenian-populated region from Azerbaijan during a war in the early 1990s that killed some 30,000 people.

International diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict have brought little progress.
