The attached section of Encyclopedia of the Third World and the 10 August 1995 Reuters report provide information on the Moroccan Berbers. Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1994 (1995, 1152), which is available at Regional Documentation Centres, also refers to them.
The attached four articles provide information on the relationship between the Berbers and the Moroccan government. They refer to the arrest and trials of seven Berber teachers who were demanding that the Berber langauge be made an official language (Reuters 27 and 31 May 1994), and to a new Moroccan policy that permits the teaching of Berber languages in schools (Reuters 21 Aug. 1994; Financial Times 27 Oct. 1994).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
