A suicide bombing near a police check point in eastern Lebanon on Friday has been strongly condemned by the United Nations envoy in the country.

According to reports, a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle in Dahr El-Baidar killing one person and injuring scores of others.

The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly expressed his sympathy to Lebanese officials following the death of a member of the Internal Security Forces.

Mr Plumbly noted that security measures have been increased in parts of the country.

He stressed the importance of the work that the authorities are carrying out to sustain the calm that has prevailed in Lebanon recently.

Mr. Plumbly expressed the UN's solidarity with the people of Lebanon as they face up to the threat of terrorism.
