A group of suspected al-Qaeda militants have seized part of a Yemeni army base in the southeastern port city of al-Mukalla.
The militants arrived at the base on the country's Arabian Peninsula on September 30 disguised as security force members. The Yemeni military said the militants killed at least two soldiers and wounded six others. They also took an unknown number of hostages, including General Muhsen Hasan, the commander of the army's second military region.
The Yemeni military reported a battle is in progress inside the base area and reinforcements are arriving.
Al-Qaeda-linked militants have been battling the Yemeni military for months. Fifty-six soldiers were killed in an attack on September 20.
