Russia says a request to look into the legality of the three Baltic countries' independence from the Soviet Union has "no legal prospects."
"We are obliged to consider all requests we get, irrespective of their content," said Prosecutor-General's Office spokeswoman Marina Gridneva on July 1. "Sometimes they are devoid of any common sense."
Gridneva added that "in this particular case it is clear that the affair has no legal prospects."
It was reported earlier that the Prosecutor-General's Office was reviewing the request by two lawmakers from the majority United Russia party.
They argued in their appeal to prosecutors that decisions by the State Council of the Soviet Union that granted independence to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in 1991 were illegal.
The Kremlin said it was not familiar with the request and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he knew nothing about it.
