Investigative journalist Andre Caramante was forced into exile after receiving death threats in relation to an article he wrote raising concerns about the violent and aggressive behaviour a former military leader turned politician.
Caramante revealed in a report in FOLHA DE SAO PAULO newspaper in July 2012, that former Commander Chief of ROTA (the special military force in Sao Paulo) Colonel Adriano Lopes Telhada was using a blog to encourage violence among police officers dealing with crime suspects. Caramante criticised the Colonel for promoting the abuse of human rights.
As a result of the piece he and his family received a stream of death threats. The newspaper arranged for the family to move to a safe location outside Brazil.
The Special Group to Control Police Officer Activity (GECEP) has launched an investigation into the threats.
