A UN official says armed Sunni Islamist militants have reportedly kidnapped sixteen Georgian nationals in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh.
Rupert Colville, the spokesman for the U.N. Commissioner for Human Rights, told reporters in Geneva on June 13 that sixteen Georgians employed at an Iraqi telecommunications company were reported kidnapped in the city of Mosul which was overrun by the militants this week.
Georgian Consul to Iraq Berdia Bekauri did not confirm the report to Russia's Interfax news agency.
Colville also said that the number of people killed by militants of so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant organization this week may run into the hundreds.
