German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier says he plans to travel to Iran in October.

He made the announcement at the opening of a diplomatic conference in Berlin on August 24.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer said the conclusion of a landmark nuclear agreement with Iran last month was a "good occasion" to restore bilateral ties.

Schaefer said details of the visit hadn't been worked out yet.

Last month, German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel became the first senior figure from a large Western government to visit Tehran since it struck the nuclear deal with world powers.

Under the July 14 agreement, U.S., EU, and UN sanctions will be gradually lifted in return for Tehran imposing curbs on nuclear activities, which the West suspects are aimed at making an atomic bomb.
