The criminal lawyer and human rights defender was assassinated in August 2012. Diego Luiz Berbare Bandeira was shot 14 times by two men on motorbikes in a rural part of São Paulo State.

Diego was a member of the Human Rights Commission of the State Parliament in Sao Paulo and had raised serious concerns about irregular practices at the Caraguatatuba Detention Center. He reported torture, corruption and a lack of medicines in the prison.

In response to making public his concerns, Diego received a series of death threats. Two months before his murder, Diego revealed these threats publically to the Human Rights Commission in order to try and protect himself.
