For a copy of legislation pertaining to the penalties for avoidance of and desertion from military service, please consult the attachment, which was sent to the DIRB by a field researcher with the Humanitarian Law Centre, a Belgrade-based nongovernmental and non-profit organization that monitors human rights abuses in Yugoslavia. In a 23 May 1997 telephone interview, the source stated that the legislation was extracted from the 1993 edition of the 1974 Yugoslav Criminal Code, which remains in effect.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
