An Iranian human rights body has urged the United Nations to allow its inspectors to travel to the United States to investigate the rights situation there.
Ahmad Esfandiari, the head of Iran's International Human Rights Center, told Fars news agency on December 17 that he made he request in a letter to the UN.
Esfandiari said "serious efforts" were needed to shed light on the human rights situation in the United States.
He urged rights groups to react to what he called the "U.S. administration's crimes against its own people," but mentioned no specifoic allegations or issues.
The request appears to be an attempt to thurn the tables on the United States, which has frequently accused Iranian authoruies of violated human rights and suppressing dissent.
