Afghan human rights advocate helps Portuguese city embrace fellow refugees
![Portugal. Sediqa Danish Nawrozi, a 29-year-old Afghan refugee, at her work place. Sediqa works as an intercultural mediator, helping fellow Afghans living in , a small city in rural eastern Portugal. Sediqa is part of a unique project called “Fundão Medeia,” which created by the city council to provide a much-needed link between newly arrived residents and local authorities. The team of intercultural mediators help new residents hailing from Brazil, African countries, South Asia, Afghanistan and beyond navigate their daily lives and access education and health care, as well as jobs. Sediqa had years of experience working in NGOs devoted to gender equality and human rights back home in Afghanistan before she was forced to flee after the Taliban takeover in 2021. She now works with fellow Afghans settling in the eastern Portuguese city of Fundão, as an intercultural mediator with "Fundão MEDEIA," an innovative integration project that receives financing from the European Union.
