As of end August 2023, there are some 182,820 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.

As of end August 2023, there are some 182,820 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. 

  • Some 159,480 are from Myanmar, comprising some 106,390 Rohingyas, 24,000 Chins, and 29,070 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar. 
     
  • The remaining individuals are some 23,340 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 6,670 Pakistanis, 3,120 Afghans, 3,160 Yemenis, 2,880 Somalis, 2,690 Syrians, 1,280 Sri Lankans, 680 Iraqis, 580 Palestinians, and others. 


Some 66% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 34% are women.

There are some 50,170 children below the age of 18.

 

UNHCR statistics does not map or reflect new arrivals into the country. 
    
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.

According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
