![Leanne Manas broacasts live for her Morning show on SABC news from the primary school in Maratane Refugee settlement. Cyclone Gombe swept away the roofs and walls of four classrooms on 11 March 2022 when it made landfall in Mozambique, also destroying or damaging desks and chairs. As a result, some 500 children had to relocate to have class in the school yard. Mozambique is one of the most exposed countries to climate change and climate disasters in the world. 2885 children attend classes at the primary school in Maratane, including 1683 refugee children. Authorities are expected to rebuild classes with stronger material in the next months.
“An issue that hit me quite hard when I visited Nampula province was the effects of climate change” says Manas. “We hear about it, read about it, and even experience it through the different weather patterns we are currently facing. But during my visit in Mozambique, it was a harsh reality to see the impact of climate change up close. Roads, and infrastructure have Mozambique.
