Submission on the New Zealand Immigration Amendment Bill 2023
May 2023
This submission was made by UNHCR's Multi-Country Representation in Canberra to the New Zealand Parliament’s inquiry into the Immigration (Mass Arrivals) Amendment Bill, conducted by the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee, in April 2023.
This submission outlines UNHCR's recommendations with respect to amendments that propose to increase the permissible period of detention without warrant for asylum-seekers arriving as part of a mass arrival group.
UNHCR also made a submission in 2012 with respect to the proposed introduction of the mass arrivals statutory framework, in which it made numerous recommendations. Read the 2012 submission on UNHCR’s website.
