Norway as a Donor

UNHCR works to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled conflict, violence, or persecution at home.

Norway is a generous and reliable donor to UNHCR and has provided key support to our efforts in protecting and providing education to refugee youth and children. Norway has also been strongly involved with Education Cannot Wait, which works to provide access to education for refugee children. Furthermore, Norway’s unearmarked funding has allowed UNHCR to react fast in emergencies as well as protect vulnerable refugee women, girls, boys, and men from and gender-based violence (GBV).

Norwegian contributions to UNHCR

Norway is one of UNHCR’s most important strategic partners and a generous donor. In 2022, Norway was UNHCR’s sixth biggest government donor with more than USD 118 million, and second biggest donor per capita. 61 per cent of Norway’s 2022 contribution to UNHCR was unearmarked.

In 2022, Norway provided contributions to UNHCR’s response to the Ukraine situation, Syria situation, Afghanistan situation, Venezuela situation and South Sudan situation.
Norway is a strong supporter of education for displaced children and refugees.
At the Global Refugee Forum, Norway pledged USD 850,000 to UNHCR’s resettlement efforts.
Norway also supports UNHCR’s Nansen Refugee Award and contributes annually with a monetary prize to the Nansen Refugee Award winner.
