No reports on whether the Algerian government routinely refused to renew Algerian students' passports in Pakistan in 1995 could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
The following information was provided during a 31 July 1998 telephone interview with an official of the Embassy of Algeria in Ottawa.
The official stated that Algerian citizens can renew their passports at Algerian diplomatic missions abroad. They must provide the following documents in order to renew the passport: for students it is a letter provided by the university that confirms the status of the applicants, while for permanent residents it is proof of status in the country, the old passport which is kept by the embassy personnel after the procedures are completed, a document providing information on the military status of the applicant and any other relevant identity documents that the applicant can submit. The official stated that this process is a formality if all the documentation provided is valid.
The official could not provide information for Pakistan in 1995.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
