In a telephone interview on 31 May 1995, the Amnesty International desk officer for Yemen in London stated that the general amnesty is not completely working and although some people are more at risk than others, the situation is very fluid and returnees who disagree with the government may face problems. The desk officer added that Amnesty International has received reports of people being detained and beaten (ibid.).
For more information on the amnesty and for information on the situation of the Yemen Socialist Party and its members, please consult Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 1994 and the attached documents.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
