No information on the treatment of Suriname citizens of Guyanese birth living in Suriname could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.
Country Reports 2001 states that "societal discrimination against women, minorities, and tribal peoples persists" in Suriname; however, there is no mention in the report of people of Guyanese birth being targeted (4 Mar. 2002). The following information may also be of interest.
Relations between Suriname and Guyana have been strained for many years due to a territorial and border dispute (AFP 28 Jan. 2002; Latin America Weekly Report 9 Apr. 2002; United States Jan. 1992). According to an Agence France Presse article, "in June 2000, [Suriname and Guyana] came close to war when Suriname enforced its line with two gunboats, forcing a Canadian company's oil rig to withdraw from the disputed area before it could drill under a license granted by Guyana" (28 Jan. 2002). Official negotiations over the disputed territory are reportedly in progress (Latin America Weekly Report 9 Apr. 2002).
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
