In Côte d'Ivoire, tensions and violent clashes over disputed presidential election results continue. On 30 December, UN OCHA estimated that almost 1,600 people had sought refuge in Duékoué in the western region of Moyen-Cavally, and almost 1,200 in Danané in neighbouring Dix-huit Montagnes.

On 3 January, new inter-communal violence in Duékoué led to further displacement. By 7 January, the number of internally displaced people (IDPs) was estimated to be over 10,000, the majority of whom had taken refuge within the compound of the Catholic Church in Duékoué. However, in Danané, the number of IDPs had reportedly decreased to around 700.

On 11 January, UN OCHA estimated that a total of 16,000 people were displaced in western Côte d'Ivoire, mainly pregnant and lactating women and children. According to UNICEF, IDPs most pressing needs are clean water, shelter and food. The UN Humanitarian Country Team warned that the situation remained volatile and the humanitarian needs of IDPs clear, after a two-day assessment mission.

The 2011 Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP) for West Africa is to be modified according to the change in Côte d'Ivoire's situation. The current UN contingency plan envisages that two million people could be affected by the current situation, including 450,000 people internally displaced.
