The following information was provided by a representative of the Embassy of the Republic of Chad in Washington during a 7 July 1997 telephone interview.

There are two means of acquiring Chadian citizenship–by birth or by naturalization.

By birth: A person is a Chadian citizen by birth if one or both parents are Chadian citizens. A person born in Chad to non-Chadian citizens can apply for Chadian citizenship after attaining the age of majority (18 years).

By naturalization: A person is eligible to apply for Chadian citizenship after 15 years of continuous residence. The Ministry of Justice is in charge of naturalization procedures, which take three years to complete. To qualify for Chadian citizenship the applicant must show that he/she is well integrated into the Chadian community and  has no criminal record.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
