The International Criminal Court has given Libya more time to consider the possible handing over of ousted leader Muammar Qaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, after the expiration of a deadline to inform the Hague-based court expired.

ICC judges granted Libya until January 23, saying the three-week extension sought by Tripoli "would cause an undue delay in the proceedings."

In June, the ICC issued a warrant for Saif on charges of crimes against humanity.

He was arrested in November, almost a month to the day after his father was captured and killed.

Saif is now in custody in Zintan, southwest of Tripoli.
