Clashes between police and protesters have been reported across Bahrain.
The clashes in several Shi'ite areas took place on the one-year anniversary of a government crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising in the Gulf Arab state.
Reports say police, many of whom are Sunni Muslims, fired tear gas, rubber bullets and sound grenades, while youths threw petrol bombs.
The Sunni ruling Al-Khalifa family dominates government and
has resisted demands to give the parliament full powers to legislate and form governments.
It describes youths clashing with police as hooligans and says Shi'ite leaders should do more to stop them.
