BISHKEK – Two people have been killed in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek, in the explosion of an artillery shell.
The Bishkek city police chief Melis Turganbaev told RFE/RL that the shell exploded in the city's Lenin district as two men were trying to cut it, most likely in order to sell it as scrap metal.
Both men died at the scene.
According to Turganbaev, two more artillery shells were found nearby.
The shells' types have not been clarified. Their origin is also unknown.
Many people in Kyrgyzstan, hit by economic hardships, resort to collecting and selling scrap metal to earn money.
