An Egyptian court has ruled that Ahmed Shafiq, Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister and a former presidential candidate, is to face trial on corruption charges.
Officials said the charges against Shafiq are linked to his time as chairman of a housing association in the 1990s when he allegedly sold plots of state land at a fraction of their value to Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, the sons of the ousted president.
No date has yet been set for the trial.
Shafiq has been living in the United Arab Emirates since he narrowly lost the June presidential election to Muhammad Morsi.
He has repeatedly denied corruption allegations and says they are politically motivated.
A judge last month placed him on a "watch list" and said he would be arrested at the border on his return.
