On 21 July Chaloka Beyani, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs), made a statement after his mission to the Maldives. He stressed the importance of preparedness measures in dealing with climate change. Beyani urged the Government of Maldives to ensure that legislation and policy address internal displacement and the need to protect and assist IDPs in finding durable solutions. This includes 1,600 people displaced by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, who are still living in difficult conditions in temporary shelters.
