Sustainable Path to Water Security Urgent Priority for Arab World
New World Bank report maps out actions needed to prevent water scarcity from impacting future growth and stability in the Middle East and North Africa
INTRODUCTION
This report is a comprehensive presentation of all data on migration gathered through IOM’s DTM programme for May -June.
Izmir – Last weekend (26-27/08), 11 teams of young migrant, refugee and Turkish entrepreneurs presented their innovative business ideas to IOM, the UN Migration Agency, in the hope of securing a grant. Under its entrepreneurship training and grants project, IOM is working to build business skills among young people, helping make their business ideas a reality.
29 August 2017, Rome: As schools resume next week in Syria, thousands of school children are benefiting from a food and nutrition education programme that is using school gardens to teach students about the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption as part of a balanced and healthy diet.
With around half of the Syrian population in need of food support and some 7 million people food insecure, young children are often the most vulnerable to malnutrition, which can have serious and long-lasting effects on their growth and future development.
Heavy fighting in southern Syria raises concern on the fate of some 45 000 people who are stranded in Hadalat and Rukban at the border between Syria and Jordan, with very limited access to resources and health services. It is estimated that more than half of those people are children, 80% of whom are affected by diarrhea that is threatening their lives.
Highlights
Syria: During the reporting period, IOM teams provided 43,887 beneficiaries in Al-Hassakeh, Rural Damascus, Lattakia, Homs, Tartous, and Damascus with non-food items, health assistance, and shelter support.
Turkey: In July, IOM began a partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent to expand the opening hours of six Turkish Red Crescent community centres providing Syrian refugees with Turkish language courses during the weekday evenings and weekends.
HIGHLIGHTS AND STATISTICS
4,263 new refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants were counted in Serbia on 27 August. 3,938 were housed in 18 governmental centres (below chart refers), of which some 400 in temporary emergency shelters (i.e. rub halls or tents) in Transit Centres near the borders to Croatia or Hungary.
OVERALL FINDINGS: 1-15 August
314 out of 1,183 ISMI-covered communities in Aleppo, Ar-Raqqa, Deir-ez-Zor, Hama, Homs and Idleb governorates experienced inward or outward movement of IDPs:
- 37,025 IDP arrivals
- 25,453 IDP departures
The evolving situation in Ar-Raqqa governorate led to the inward displacement of 6,616 individuals from Sabka (3,348) and Maadan (3,268) sub-districts to Karama sub-district.
Children living in fragile situations are four times more likely to lack access to basic drinking water
NEW YORK/STOCKHOLM, 29 August 2017 – More than 180 million people do not have access to basic drinking water in countries affected by conflict, violence and instability* around the world, UNICEF warned today, as World Water Week gets under way.
The Shelter and NFIs Cluster, led by UNHCR and co-led by Global Communities, coordinates the efforts of 48 member organizations. The Cluster addresses the coordination of emergency Shelter and NFI needs and promotes household and community resilience. The Cluster supports people in need within displaced, hosting and non-displaced populations by ensuring that the different modalities of interventions (in-kind, non-conditional/conditional cash or voucher) abide by the do-not-harm principle.
