A reporter for The Washington Post detained in Iran for a year will be back in court on August 10 in what could be the final hearing of his trial on espionage charges.
Jason Rezaian, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen who was born in the United States, has been held for more than a year in Tehran's Evin prison on charges that include espionage and distributing propaganda against Iran.
"The sham trial of Jason Rezaian, The Washington Post's correspondent in Tehran, may now finally be nearing its end," the newspaper's executive editor, Martin Baron, said in an August 8 statement.
He said Rezaian's lawyer had been told that the session would be "the final hearing before a verdict is reached."
U.S. officials, The Washington Post, and rights groups have criticized Rezaian's closed-door trial and pressed for his release. They have rejected the charges against him.
