According to a representative of the Embassy of Greece in Ottawa, a Kurd born in Turkey of a Kurdish-Turkish father (also born in Turkey) and an ethnically Greek mother (also born in Turkey) may be entitled to Greek nationality if his mother is a Greek national (31 Aug. 1993).

The Greek Nationality Code of 20 September 1955 stipulates that

Persons of Greek ethnic origin who are stateless or of unknown nationality, have their domicile abroad and actually comport themselves as Greeks, and have accomplished 21 years of age, may be recognized as Greek nationals, if they file a petition with the Greek consular authority of the place of their domicile. The consular authority transmits the petition to the Ministry of the Interior with a report on its contents.

If the Minister of the Interior accepts the petition, the said person takes the oath of the Greek citizen ... (Article 5.1).

The unmarried children of the person recognized that have not attained the age of twenty on the day the oath is taken, become Greek nationals as from that day (Article 5.3).

With the 1984 amendment to the Greek Nationality Code, a child born of a Greek national, male or female, receives Greek nationality at birth (Marie-Hélène de Branbandere-Marescaux May 1988, 10-11). For further information and comments on the Greek Nationality Code and its application, please refer to the attached documents.

No additional and/or corroborating information on this topic is currently available to the DIRB in Ottawa.
