On 18 April 2001 an official at the Consulate of Afghanistan in New York stated that Afghan refugees in Pakistan can obtain passports at Afghan consulates in Pakistan, including in Peshawar and Islamabad. The official stated that since 1997 all of the Afghan consulates in Pakistan have been controlled by the Taliban.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
