In a 9 April 1998 telephone interview, the chair of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee in Sofia stated that a draft law on alternative military service was debated and passed the first reading in the Bulgarian parliament in January 1998. The draft law is still before parliament and will undergo a second reading.

Additional or corroborating information on a draft law on alternative military service could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints.
