Information on the treatment and current status of the Chuvash ethnic group is currently unavailable to the DIRB, however the following information may be useful.
There are approximately 1.75 million Chuvash in central Russia, of whom 1.3 million live in Chuvashia, an autonomous republic located west of Tatarstan (World Directory of Minorities 1990, 165). There are also a large number of Chuvash living in Tatarstan, where there are an estimated 1000 Chuvash schools (Current Digest 29 Sept. 1993).
