Two specialists on Lebanon indicated that the fact that this person was granted Lebanese citizenship indicates that the person is "acceptable" to the Lebanese government (12 July 1999; 8 July 1999). They added that unless the person committed a crime such as murder, they could not understand how this person would be at risk in Lebanon from the Amal movement or the Syrian intelligence service (ibid.).
The specialists are the Director of the Centre d'études et de recherche sur le Moyen-Orient contemporain (CERMOC), a French research organization based in Beirut and Amman, and a professor at the Centre des hautes études sur l'Afrique et l'Asie moderne (CHÉAAM) in Paris who is the former editor of Arabies and Jeune Afrique magazines.
