The 7 June 1996 Nezavisimaya Gazeta states:

In accordance with the January 23, 1996 edict of the president of the Azerbaijan Republic, servicemen who are 25 years of age or older and who have served for more than two years are subject to release from the republic armed forces. The demobilization process will be conducted in stages. So, the period of service of young men in the Azerbaijan Armed Forces totals a minimum of three-four years.

For information on the killing of an Azerbaijani deserter and a presidential amnesty affecting deserters, please consult the ITAR-TASS and the Associated Press (AP) attachments. For information on whether there was fighting in Azerbaijan in 1996 and whether a peace treaty exists, please consult the Nezavisimaya Gazeta and the Interfax attachments.
