Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi of Iran has called on the West to improve its treatment of refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East and the Arab world.
"These people are fleeing poverty. They are fleeing despotism. They are fleeing the oppression meted out by their governments," Ebadi said while speaking at a panel of Nobel Peace laureates in the Polish capital, Warsaw, on October 22.
Ebadi called on European governments to do more to help migrants and refugees and to prevent tragedies such as recent shipwrecks that have killed hundreds in the Mediterranean.
She also said that Switzerland and other European nations should spend the huge bank deposits of former Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi on the welfare of the Libyan people.
The Warsaw conference is being hosted by former Polish President Lech Walesa, himself a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
