For information on military conscription practices in Ecuador, please consult Responses to Information Requests ECU13232.E of 17 February 1993 and ECU13411.E of 23 February 1993.

In a 3 February 1997 telephone interview an official with the Embassy of Ecuador in Ottawa stated that military conscription practices have not changed since February 1993. The official also stated that the country's constitution makes no provisions for alternative service for conscientious objectors (ibid.).

A United Nations report entitled The Role of Youth in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Including the Question of Conscientious Objection to Military Service corroborates the above-mentioned statement on conscientious objectors and has been attached for additional information (19 Dec. 1994, 6).

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
