According to a consular officer at the High Commission of Guyana in Ottawa, Guyana does not have a strictly defined and uniform system for granting permanent residence (22 June 1993). To obtain a visa that would allow residence in Guyana, a foreigner must first arrive in Guyana as a visitor, and once in Guyana, must approach the Ministry of Home Affairs to request a new visa or a visa extension (Ibid.). Visas that allow residence in Guyana cannot be obtained abroad (Ibid.). The visas that enable a foreigner to reside in Guyana can be valid for a definite or an indefinite period (Ibid.). A foreigner can request Guyanese nationality and be naturalized after residing in Guyana for five years (Ibid.).

Current information on a specific treatment of ethnic Chinese in Guyana could not be found among the available sources. However, please find attached some recent documents that refer to ethnic relations in Guyana in general. These documents refer mostly to politically-related conflicts between Indo- and Afro-Guyanese and demography, but without reference to a specific treatment of ethnic Chinese.

Additional and/or corroborating information could not be found among the sources currently available to the DIRB.
