  • Heavy rainfall, high winds, and subsequent floods across central and southern Mozambique due to Tropical Cyclone Freddy resulted in at least 10 deaths and adversely affected approximately 224,000 people between February 24 and March 3, according to the Government of the Republic of Mozambique (GoRM) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The cyclone exacerbated damage from floods in early February, which also resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people.

  • The effects of the storm are likely to exacerbate humanitarian conditions in Mozambique, where an ongoing cholera outbreak had resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people as of February 19, according to the GoRM.

  • Non-state armed group (NSAG) violence continues to result in civilian casualties, drive displacement, generate humanitarian needs, and restrict basic services in northern Mozambique, where the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) had exceeded 1 million as of November 2022, according to IOM.
