l) Attached is an article from Sing Tao Daily News (in unofficial translation), published in Vancouver on 27 December 1989, which alleges that the Japanese government has recently been reluctant to renew the visas of Chinese students studying in Japan. This article cannot currently be corroborated in other sources available to the IRBDC. No further information on this topic is currently available to the IRBDC.

2) An article entitled "Chinese Students in Japan Form Resistance Movement", published by Reuters on 10 August 1989, quotes a leader of a group composed of Chinese students in Japan who claimed that "Japan is not like the United States or France. It offers no protection to Chinese students here." This article is attached, for your information. However, both this article and one entitled "Report 3182 Arrested in East China, Including Protesters", published by The Associated Press on 26 July 1989, mention that the Japanese government has stated that it would not return to China a student who feared ill-treatment. No further information on this topic is currently available to the IRBDC.
