Comments The present report concerns a follow-up mission to Italy undertaken from 5 to 8 November 2002 by the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers. The Special Rapporteur undertook an earlier fact-finding mission to Italy, 11 to 14 March 2002, after receiving information of growing tension between the magistrates, including prosecutors, and the Government. This tension resulted in nationwide protests organized by magistrates at the beginning of the legal year in January 2002. Following that mission, the Special Rapporteur submitted a preliminary report (E/CN.4/2002/72/Add.3) containing his observations and initial recommendations.
