According to the Agence France Press, the Amhara constitute forty per cent of Ethiopia's 50 million population (2 Nov. 1991). They regard themselves as the country's elite and dominate the political, economical and social activities in the central highlands and the Shoa regions (province) housing the capital, Addis Abeda (Ibid.).
