Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees
The Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR), which supports voluntary repatriation, sustainable reintegration and assistance to host countries, was drafted in 2012 by Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, with the support of UNHCR. The strategy advances a regional approach to solutions and also promotes burden-and responsibility-sharing for refugees at regional and global levels.

In conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees (SSAR), UNHCR will hold a side event exploring how area-based approaches support and enable durable solutions. With over 1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) having returned home in the year since the end of large-scale armed conflict, area-based approaches have been key to building community resilience, supporting the sustainability of return as well as building potential for the eventual further returns of forcibly displaced Afghans.
