A new report says about 1,000 people contract tuberculosis daily in Europe and Central Asia.
The document was launched on March 17 by the World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
It says cases of the contagious bacterial lung disease in the region, the most affected area in the world, fell by 5.6 percent between 2012 and 2013.
There were some 360,000 reported tuberculosis cases in 2013 with 85 percent occurring in 18 "high priority" countries, including Russia and 11 former Soviet republics.
Most of the 38,000 deaths from the disease were in the former Communist bloc.
The report says slow progress against the disease coupled with rising drug resistance mean the region has little chance of meeting a target to eliminate it by 2050.
