Please find attached an excerpt from a letter dated 5 February 1992 from Budislav Vukas of the Faculty of Law at the University of Zagreb which provides information on conscription in Croatia to the best of his knowledge.

According to a Legal Affairs Counsellor at the Office of Croatia in Wahington, D.C., a new military service law is currently before the Croatian parliament (2 June 1992). Currently military service is ten months for men of 18 years, but the draft law will reduce service to six months (Ibid.). Students can postpone military service until after university. Although the terms are not specifically spelled out, there are provisions for alternative military service. In practice, the length of alternative service has been double that of regular military service, and has involved office work or work such as driving ambulances (Ibid.).

There is no further information currently available to the IRBDC specific to the terms of military service in Croatia. However, the attached articles related to demobilization of Croatian reservists and restrictions on the travel of men of draft age may be of some interest.
