A representative of the Anti-War Campaign in Zagreb provided the following information (31 Oct. 1994). The maximum penalty for desertion is five years imprisonment, and this punishment is imposed by military tribunals. In six cases known to the representative, the sentences ranged from 6 to 18 months. Penalties for desertion apply to reservists and professional soldiers, and are applied throughout Croatia. The DIRB is unable to corroborate this information at the present time.
This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
