An official at the Trinidad and Tobago consulate in Toronto stated during a 6 September 1996 telephone interview that the only way a person born in Trinidad and Tobago could have lost his/her Trinidad and Tobago citizenship is by having acquired another nationality before July 1988 when dual citizenship was introduced in the legislation. A person who lost his/her Trinidad and Tobago citizenship may be allowed to return and resettle in Trinidad and Tobago by either applying for residence or citizenship restoration (ibid.). The official further indicated that citizenship restoration would be the best alternative.

For further information on the above-mentioned topic, please refer to the attached excerpts of Act No. 21 of 1988, an Act to amend the citizenship of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Act.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
