According to a representative of the Embassy of Turkey in Ottawa, a non-national holding a residence permit is not entitled to Turkish nationality even if the person resides in Turkey for a long period of time (2 Dec. 1992). There is a difference in the rights and obligations attached to residence permits of persons who are sponsored and those who are not. If a person does not have a sponsor, she/he will not be allowed to go to school or to work in the public service (Ibid.).

The representative added that the non-national sponsored by a spouse of Turkish nationality, and holding a residence permit, will be allowed to reside indefinitely in Turkey (Ibid.). However, in the above-mentioned situation, a divorce would mean the loss of all benefits provided by the residence permit and the return of the non-national to her/his country of origin (Ibid.). In Turkey, nationality is transmitted by the father (Ibid.). The status of the children of a couple where the husband is a Turkish national who sponsored his spouse would not be affected by a divorce; they would still remain Turkish nationals (Ibid.). Additional and/or corroborating information on this subject is currently unavailable to the DIRB in Ottawa.
