A representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Ottawa and a researcher of the Andean Commission of Jurists in Lima state that there are no reports of forced repatriation or of mistreatment of Peruvian asylum seekers in Panama (5 Oct. 1993; 7 Oct. 1993). The researcher of the Andean Commission of Jurists, after conducting consultations and a search of press reports, indicated the lack of information on this subject does not necessarily means that abuses or forced repatriation of Peruvian asylum seekers in Panama did not occurred (7 Oct. 1993).

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
