The Kyrgyz border guard service says its forces have shot and killed a border guard suspected of shooting dead four fellow soldiers and an officer's wife.

A border guard spokesman said the fugitive soldier was found on August 21 in a mountain gorge in the Issyk-Kul region, near Kyrgyzstan's border with Kazakhstan.

The border guard service said in a statement that the suspect was killed in a shootout after he put up "armed resistance" to arrest.

Four soldiers, including the border post commander, and the officer's wife were killed in the August 20 attack at the remote outpost.

Officials have not revealed a possible motive for the killings.

An investigation has been launched.
