According to the Military Attaché at the Embassy of The Czech and Slovak Federal Republic in Ottawa, between 1985 and 1987 young men could choose to work as coal miners rather than serve in the army, on condition that they work for five years which was twice as long as army service (28 Nov. 1991).

The IRBDC is unable to corroborate this information at the present time.
